A Diary of a Microlight Pilot Flying a Rans S6ES

G-RTHS

About This Site

This blog is an on-line extension to the occasional diary I have been keeping of my flying for the last 6 years. It is not really written as though it is going to be read by anyone else, but as a reminder to me of the fun my wife and I have with our flying and lately building our Rans S6 ES G-RTHS.

If the writing here gives you some idea of the fun that building and flying microlights can be, then it has been worthwhile. This has to be one of the cheapest ways of flying and still have the ability to fly reasonable distances.

I hope you enjoy reading this blog, which can only be described as an ongoing love story.

My name is Tony and I am in my early 50’s. As a child, I always wanted to be able to be a pilot. Later on when I learnt how many exams were involved, I lost some of the interest in being a pilot, but I never lost my love of flying. Now that I am a pilot, I feel really blessed.

Personally I find it a great way to escape for a short while from the trials and tribulations down on the ground. While flying, nothing else in the world matters, it is just pure contentment and inner peace. The earth looks clean and fresh, and the sky is a living thing with its own temper tantrums as well as it’s totally tranquil periods. Being a pilot in a small, fairly slow, aircraft that you fly ‘by the seat of your pants’ and being able to land at small grass strips that many aircraft would not contemplate is just pure bliss.

I started to learn to fly microlights at Medway Airsports in Kent in August 2001 and passed my GFT (General Flying Test) in May 2002. I have owned 3 microlights. The first was an X-air with a Rotax 582 engine.

I replaced the X-Air with a Thruster T600N ‘Essex Girl’ with a Jabiru 2200 engine.

My latest aircraft is a Rans S6ES. I average about 75 hours flying a year.
