ME262 – Out of luck
This piece of aviation art shows a ME262. It has suffered an engine failure while attacking some American bombers. This aircraft did suffer a lot of engine problems.
The aircraft shown is on show at RAF Museum Cosford (https://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/cosford/)
The Messerschmitt Me262 was the world’s first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft. The engines did suffer from reliability problems but when they did work they were hard to shoot down.
Me262 pilots claimed a total of 542 Allied aircraft shot down The aircraft had little impact on the course of the war as a result of its late introduction. Only small numbers put in operational service.
The aircraft’s roles included light bomber, reconnaissance and night fighter versions.
