Eyes in the sky – Westland Scout

This piece of art is called ‘Eyes in the sky’. It shows a A British Army Air corps Westland scout operating as the eyes in the sky for a squadron of Chieftain mk5 tanks on manoeuvres in the early 1970s.

The Westland scout AH Mk 1 first flew in 1961 and as 160 were produced. The Scout proved its operational versatility, working in close-support, liaison, light freight, medivac, communication, reconnaissance, search and rescue and training roles.

This particular helicopter, XT626, is currently operated in the UK by the Historic Army Aircraft Flight. It first flew in 1963 and continued in service until the late 1980s.
